Texas-based Artist Thomas Actively Pursues Identity in the Age of the Image

Austin, Texas, August 31, 2006 — Volitant Gallery proudly presents Terri Thomas's first Texas solo exhibition entitled "U-Genics". Revealing to viewers the complicated social dynamics of femininity in an era of image saturation, "U-Genics" promotes discovery of our multifaceted identities, the anxieties and influences that play and prey upon us. The exhibiton's title derives from the concept of the proposed improvement of the human species through scientific and medical manipulation. "As a society, we are enthralled with facsimiles, illusions and notions of "Beauty" and the "Double", says Thomas, "so much so, that we prefer the image to the object, appearance to substance, fantasy to reality, form to content, and copies to their original."

The diverse work in "U-Genics" makes apparent the ambiguity existing between real identities and idealized images endorsed by the media. "Despite the powerful visual language of her videos, paintings, digital stills and performances, there is more than initially meets the eye", observes New York art critic and curator, Joe Martin Hill. According to Thomas, "The essential focus of "U-Genics" is to reveal the triangulated intersection among notions of perfection, advancements in technology, and the circulation of consumer imagery that fuels our desire for self-improvement and self-production."

As a groundbreaking and adventurous contemporary art gallery, Volitant Gallery opened its doors in Austin, on April 15th, 2006 at 320 Congress Avenue (southwest corner of 4th and Congress). Its ambitious mission to share both regional and international contemporary art with Austin continues with Terri Thomas' "U-Genics". In addition to the gallery's work with internationally-known artists, such as Marcos Lopez, Nicola Costantino and Stanikas, Volitant seeks to nurture and celebrate Austin's local art scene, helping regional artists expand their recognition and contributing to the richness of the vital national art scene.
